Support for Fran's Plants Database has come to an end.

This database was designed and written by myself with FileMaker 4.0 on an Apple Macintosh 6400/200.

As a standalone application Fran's Plants Database will run on Apple Macintosh (System 7.6 to 9.1 on PowerPC or 680x0 architecture) and on PC's running Windows 95 and NT 4. It should also run under Windows 98/ME (tell us how you get on).

It is my first attempt using FileMaker and is for my partner Fran who is a keen gardener and plant collector.

Why another plants database? I have had a look at most plants database available and they lack the flexibility we require, specifically, we are aiming at a database which everyone can contribute to and benefit from, with new plant entries, new database functionality (e.g. new reports) and new ancillary databases (e.g. Germination Data and Harmonious Collections).

We want to use the plant data in many ways e.g.:

• Develop reports for garden design.
  - For displaying plants to be used
  - The quantities needed.
  - Possible costs involved.
   
• Track the position of plants in the garden (very useful in the winter when a plant is no longer showing)
   
• Group useful combinations of plants for their complementary colours, shape, etc.
   
• Identify their pests/diseases and useful remedies for their removal.

We have encountered various disadvantages with other plant databases. For example, current CD Products are limited to around 600 Mb, After 2000+ pictures, you're left with little space for detailed information and they are severely limited in their customisation. You normally cannot even add your own plants!

Fran's Plants Database is also available from a number of file download/shareware sites. Some have reviewed our work.
